Native Voice One Steps Up Public Radio's New Native Radio Network Launches On-line Initiative
Albuquerque, NM (PRWEB) October 5, 2006 -- Native Voice One (NV1), the new Native radio distribution service and subsidiary of Koahnic Broadcast Corporation, announces the October 1 launch of its website and 24x7 on-line program stream, www.NV1.org. The site, developed in conjunction with partners Public Interactive and SchardtMEDIA, targets internet users with both audio and visual elements specific to Native American news and culture. In addition to the program stream, visitors will find Native news from communities throughout North America, program and producer information, and a Native American national calendar of events. Another innovation on the site will be profiles of each of the reservation based stations affiliated with the network.
To spearhead their on-line effort, NV1 brought on David Newberger (Couer de’Alene) who is overseeing the design, functionality, and overall aesthetic of the website.
NV1, launched in July 2006 with significant start-up funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, currently serves public radio stations and their listeners with a unique schedule of 24x7 satellite distributed radio programming.
In making the announcement, NV1 Network Manger, Burt Poley (Hopi/Laguna) remarked, “We are very excited about the potential for reaching a whole new audience. I believe our stations and on-line listeners will find the site provides a rich experience of American culture from a uniquely Native standpoint. We will serve as an important gateway to a diverse community of Native stations across the nation and the world.” Poley continued, “We’re also eagerly anticipating the next phase of development, which is to begin offering podcasts and on-demand services sometime later in the year.”
NV1’s current program roster, which will be an integral part of the on-line stream, includes programs such as Native America Calling, Reach the Rez Radio and Voices from the Circle. “One of the key objectives of the network,” said Program Manager Nola Daves Moses, “is to foster new programs.” Two that are currently in development are Speaking of Natives with former long time Native America Calling host, Harlan McKasoto, and Rezervations with Dawn Karima. Dawn Karima Pettigrew is a former Miss Native American Worldwide and has produced and hosted shows for both television and radio. Both of these public affairs programs will be piloted in October.
Native Voice One, the Native American Radio Service, is based in Albuquerque, NM and distributes 24x7 programming to a network of Native and public radio stations across the United States, and to listeners world-wide via www.NV1.org. NV1 is a division of Anchorage based Koahnic Broadcast Corporation (KBC) www.knba.org which has been a leader for 14 years, bringing Native voices to Alaska, the nation, and the world. KBC produces Native radio’s daily flagship programs, including National Native News, Native America Calling, Earthsongs, Stories of Our People, and Native Word of the Day, and also operates local station affiliate, KNBA, the first Native radio station located in an urban market. Through its training programs, KBC seeks to increase Native and minority voices in the media.
