ELVA-1 E-Band Radio Links: The Antennas Make A Difference
St. Petersburg, Russia (PRWEB) February 25, 2008 -- Not content to mate ordinary dish antennas to its extraordinary point to point radio technology, ELVA-1 used its formidable millimeter wave design expertise to develop a special breed of antenna that was specifically designed to provide high performance in this unique application, without the added cost that such antennas would normally incur.
These antennas, designated ECA-XX series, are dual reflector, Cassegrain type, designed to operate over full waveguide frequency bands from 26.5GHz to 140GHz, with main reflector diameters ranging from 10 cm to 90 cm. Maximum gain of the antennas is 54dBi, depending upon frequency and reflector diameter. ECA-XX series antennas are specially designed for minimal cross-section, thus reducing aperture blockage and producing extremely low sidelobe levels (typically -18dB). Typical VSWR is 1.25:1, and the antenna feed can be provided as either rectangular or circular waveguide, with an optional circular to rectangular transition.
ELVA-1 utilizes its own advanced antenna design and development technology to map performance. For this purpose, the company developed a fully automated instrumentation system that can be programmed to acquire antenna measurements over any entire frequency band. The antenna under test is mounted on a special fixture that scans it in the designated axes. All test data is collected and processed in a dedicated computer system that displays results in both 2-D and 3-D graphical formats. Each antenna is measured under ideal RF conditions, on a broad rooftop, with no reflecting or attenuating structures nearby. The resulting measurements provide an excellent baseline for real-world performance expectations.
The pattern diagram of ELVA-1 ECA-XX series antennas meets the precise mask requirements of both FCC and ETSI. As shown in Figure 1, actual performance differs little from theoretical prediction, and is well within mask limits, with room to spare. By providing pattern measurement documentation with each ECA-XX antenna, ELVA-1 assures its customers that the highest quality and performance standards have been met.
All ELVA-1 PPC-1000-E digital radio links operating at 40.5-43.5 GHz, 71-86 GHz and 92-95 GHz for both the EU and USA can be supplied with 10, 20, 30, 45, 60 or 90 cm antennas, depending upon the application. The size of the antenna is the most critical option in determining the operating distance of a radio link. ELVA-1 also makes custom Cassegrain antennas for frequencies from 110 GHz to 170 GHz for special applications.
ELVA-1 was the first company in the world to produce a gigabit capacity digital radio link in the 40.5-43.5 frequency band. Their experience at these frequencies was instrumental in selecting Cassegrain antennas for the development of PPC-1000-E radio links in the 71-86 GHz band.
These new PPC-1000-E digital radio links provide full duplex gigabit Ethernet transmission capacity in accordance with FCC standards. They wirelessly interconnect remote LAN segments at a data capacity of 1.25 Gbps, utilizing the gigabit Ethernet (Gig-E) protocol that is the evolving standard for switches and routers available from a variety of telecommunications equipment manufacturers.
PPC-1000-E digital radio links are equipped with an SNMP management function, allowing a network administrator or technician to remotely control the operating parameters of all PPC-1000-E radios in the network from a central location. To enable turnkey installation, the PPC-1000-E is provided as a comprehensive hardware package, including two radios, two antennas with mounting brackets and all accessories necessary to set up a link. No indoor unit is necessary, as the outdoor unit is connected directly to your switch or router by customer-supplied fiberoptic cable.
ELVA-1 PPC-1000-E wireless millimeter wave links provide fiber-equivalent data transmission capacity, reliability and security, but without the high deployment cost of fiber. Costing less than the average cost of outdoor fiber installations and services in urban environments, these wireless gigabit millimeter wave links are very cost-effective in an increasingly cost-conscious market.
